Building strong communities
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

Helping our communities success
There are communities in Charlotte, NC that are underserved and under-represented in biodiversity and conservation initiatives. Through involvement with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s (NCWF) Butterfly Highway program, residents from these neighborhoods have seen the potential good in participating in the National Wildlife Federation’s Certified Wildlife Habitat program as well.
To launch such a Certified Wildlife Habitat initiative, members from historically black neighborhoods such as Northwood Estates, University Park, Oaklawn Park, Druid Hills and others came together to form a new environmental coalition with the intention of becoming a chartered chapter of NCWF.
The initial meeting was held in the spring of 2016 where the name Community Alliance for Wildlife (CAW) was chosen. Since the meeting, CAW has become one of the newest chapters of NCWF.
With its formation, CAW is in a position to help its neighborhoods succeed in creating healthy habitats for people and wildlife.
Mission, Vision & Goals
CAW's mission is to inspire, equip and mobilize people to protect, conserve and restore wildlife for the future of Charlotte's children.
CAW’s stewardship will result in Charlotte communities with bountiful and diverse wildlife, including all species of wild flora and fauna, that is valued by its citizens and elected officials, and sustainably managed.
CAW will 1) sponsor and support programs for the enjoyment and conservation of wildlife and habitat, including ethical and sustainable outdoor recreation pursuits and 2) enhance and expand opportunities for youth and adults that foster awareness and appreciation of the important role healthy habitat plays in sustaining wildlife and humanity.
A place in the sun for generations
The future is now
As members of your communities, the work we do together helps insure a future for our children and their children. The time to act is NOW!
What people are saying about us
"My neighborhood’s partnership with NCWF and Piedmont Natural Gas established a pollinator garden on over an acre parcel – which we have designated as “Our Secret Garden”. This has been a catalyst in igniting community interaction and discussions about our environment, conservation, and preservation of our wildlife and natural habitats. As a result, I have become committed to pursue and assist in sustaining co-habitation between wildlife, the environment and mankind. Thank you NCWF for spurring my interest!"
